Yüksek Lisans programlarına başvuracak adayların lisans derecesine sahip olmaları veya koşullu ön kabul için lisans öğrenimlerinin son yarıyılında öğrenci olmaları gerekir.
Doktora programlarına başvuracak adayların yüksek lisans derecesine sahip olmaları veya koşullu ön kabul için yüksek lisans öğrenimlerinin son yarıyılında öğrenci olmaları gerekir.
Tezsiz yüksek lisans programlarından mezun olanlar doktora programlarına başvuramaz, ancak 06/02/2013 tarihinden önce tezsiz yüksek lisans programlarına kayıtlı olan öğrenciler başvurabilir.
Mezun olabilecek durumda başvuru yapanlar, kesin kayıt tarihlerinde mezuniyet belgelerini veya mezun olduğuna dair mezuniyet tarihini de belirten Üniversitelerinden onaylı bir belge ibraz etmek zorundadırlar. Kesin kayıt tarihinden önce mezun olamayan öğrenciler, asil olarak kazanmış olsalar dahi kesin kayıtları yapılmayacaktır.
Lisansüstü programlar, yüksek lisans, doktora ve tıpta uzmanlık programlarını kapsar. Türkiye’de, bu programlar enstitüler aracılığı ile yürütülür. Yüksek lisans programları, tezli ve tezsiz olmak üzere iki şekilde yürütülebilir. Tezli yüksek lisans programı en az yedi ders, bir seminer dersi ve tez çalışmasından oluşur. Tezsiz yüksek lisans programı ise en az on ders ve dönem projesinden oluşur. Yüksek lisans programlarını bitirme süresi 2 yıldır. Doktora programları, en az yedi ders, yeterlik sınavı, tez önerisi ve tez çalışmasından oluşur. Doktora programı derslerini tamamlama süresi en çok 4 yarıyıl, doktora programını bitirme süresi ise 8 yarıyıldır. Doktora programlarına başvurabilmek için yüksek lisans derecesine sahip olmak zorunludur. Tıpta uzmanlık programları doktora programları ile eşdeğer düzeydedir ve üniversitelerin Tıp Fakültelerinde ve Sağlık Bakanlığı veya Sosyal Sigortalar Kurumu’na bağlı hastanelerde yürütülmektedir.
Lisansüstü programlara başvuracak adayların, başvurularında, genellikle, tamamladıkları eğitime ait diploma, aldıkları derslerin içerikleri ve not çizelgesine ek olarak, referans ve niyet mektupları ve Türkiye’de yapılan Lisansüstü Giriş Sınavı (ALES) sonucu veya uluslararası düzeyde tanınmış bir lisansüstü giriş sınav sonucu (GRE, GMAT vb.) sunmaları gerekebilir. Her üniversite ve programın farklı kabul kriterleri olabilir. Bu nedenle, lisansüstü düzeyde öğrenim görmek isteyenlerin doğrudan enstitülere başvurmaları gerekmektedir.

(TC Vatandaşı için); Lisans veya Yüksek Lisans eğitimini yurtdışında tamamlamış TC Vatandaşı adayların; Yükseköğretim Kurulu Başkanlığından diploma denklik belgesi almaları gerekmektedir. Diploma Denklik Belgesi müracaatını yapan aday başvurusunu gerçekleştirebilir ancak kesin kayıt sırasında belge alındıktan sonra ibraz edilmesi gerekmektedir. Yüksek lisans ya da Doktora başvurusunda bulunacak Yabancı Uyruklu adayların, denklik başvurusu yapmalarına gerek yoktur.
